A logical and appropriate interaction with various classes of society is one of the key ways to understand prominent individuals and their character. Clearly, the conduct and social practice (sira) of the Infallibles, who serve as role models and binding religious authorities for all, can exert a profound influence on society. For this reason, examining their social conduct is of great importance. This article explores aspects of the Infallibles’ social conduct in their relations with others—both Muslims and non-Muslims—using an analytical-descriptive method and drawing on the most important Shia sources, namely the Kutub Arba‘a (Four Books). First, it introduces the various social groups of the Infallibles’ time, classifying them into five categories. It then identifies five key principles to be observed in dealing with all groups: commitment to justice, faithfulness to covenants, assistance to those in need, coexistence, and trustworthiness.
The study further highlights four principles specific to interactions with Muslims: kindness, good treatment, justice and truth-seeking, and benevolence. Finally, it discusses certain points regarding engagement with the general Muslim populace, particularly non- Shia Muslims, emphasizing the recommendation to maintain cooperation and harmony with them.
