Political philosophy, like the skeleton of a building, forms the foundation of a political system. This article aims to present a coherent system of Imam Khomeini’s political philosophy with an emphasis on the theory of fitrah (innate nature). This theory serves as the cornerstone for Imam Khomeini’s epistemology, anthropology, ontology, teleology, and political guidance. The findings indicate that fitrah, as a theistic infrastructure, negates both polytheism and illusory multiplicities while providing a unifying strategy. In this intellectual system, humans possess three dimensions—rational, spiritual, and physical—and political philosophy occupies a central position in the rational dimension. From Imam Khomeini’s perspective, the ideal state is a threefold system (comprising love, education, and guidance) that employs power solely to overcome internal and external obstacles to human perfection. The innovation of this article lies in presenting a “philosophical system” from epistemology to state theory based on a central concept, namely fitrah. This approach brings coherence to Imam Khomeini’s thought. The article also offers a fundamental critique of humanism and secular political systems (the errant and the despotic states) and introduces the Islamic Republic as a practical model of an Islamic state. Centered on divine law, this model can meet both material and spiritual needs of contemporary humans and harmonizes divine legitimacy with popular acceptance. The study employs the “method of inference” to organize its findings.
