In the common literature of political science, legitimacy refers to the acceptance of the rightfulness of a system or ruler by the people in exercising power. However, in the Islamic political system, the concept of legitimacy goes beyond this conventional definition and is fundamentally tied to the Islamic sharia, which serves as the primary source of legitimacy. This link creates a fundamental distinction between the concept of legitimacy in Islamic political thought and its counterpart in Western political theory. The aim of this study is to analyze the concept of legitimacy in Islam, with an emphasis on the essential relationship between legitimacy and power in the Islamic political system. To this end, the study first examines and explains various definitions of power and explores the perspectives of scholars on this subject. It then investigates the relationship between legitimacy and power in political literature. Following this, the research presents a comprehensive understanding of legitimacy in Islamic thought and analyzes the role and position of the people in realizing legitimacy and strengthening power within the Islamic system. This study further highlights how divine legitimacy manifests in the political system through its alignment with Islamic teachings, while also assessing the role of public acceptance in actualizing this legitimacy. The researcher ultimately concludes that divine legitimacy—grounded in adherence to Islamic law and reinforced by popular acceptance—constitutes the core foundation of political power in Islam and the fundamental factor in strengthening the stability and continuity of the Islamic system.
