In Hodgson’s view, Islamic civilization is the product of a combination of diverse cultures that are interconnected through the transcendent culture of the Qur’an. This model follows an expansive trajectory throughout history. As a prominent orientalist, Hodgson uses the Qur’anic concept of ummah to analyze the idea of a civilizational society. From his perspective, the concept of ummah is equivalent to civilization, which he refers to as the Ummah Society. According to Hodgson, the Qur’an, as the text that articulates the idea of a civilizational ummah, functions as the central axis for the civilizational expansion of Muslims. Historically, he maintains that envisioning the ummah and civilization is impossible without returning to the authentic historical Islam. Hodgson attributes the civilizational reliance of Muslims on the Qur’an to its comprehensive worldview; therefore, he argues that an Ummah Society must be formed for the macro-structure of a civilizational ummah to be realized. To achieve this, he emphasizes the necessity of a shared lifestyle that, inspired by the Qur’an, becomes embodied in social systems. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article provides a clear formulation of Hodgson’s idea.
