This study examines Sa‘id Hawwa’s Qur’anic commentary Al-Asas fi al-Tafsir and analyzes his interpretive methodology for presenting the Qur’an as a book of renaissance and a guide for reform movements. Using an analytical–critical approach, the research explores how Hawwa engages with Qur’anic concepts related to social transformation—such as tawhid, jihad, enjoining right and forbidding wrong, and Islamic unity. The findings reveal that Hawwa offers a dynamic reading of the Qur’an, linking Qur’anic texts to social realities while drawing intellectual inspiration from the thought of the Muslim Brotherhood. His exegetical approach highlights the Qur’an’s role in guiding the Muslim community toward revival and renewal, emphasizing its educational and political dimensions. The study further discusses both the strengths of this approach—such as its comprehensiveness and capacity to stimulate social action—and its key challenges. Ultimately, the research clarifies the foundational principles of Hawwa’s interpretation within the broader field of social Qur’anic interpretation and underscores its contribution to rethinking the Qur’an’s role in contemporary Islamic movements.
